Golden Eagles Host UIC in Season Opener Sunday

MILWAUKEE - Following a season with a nearly flawless home record, the Marquette women's tennis team hosts UIC in its first match of the dual season Sunday morning. Doubles play begins at 10 a.m. at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
The Golden Eagles return six players from last spring, and two newcomers - Rocio Diaz and Chelsea Utting. Utting played with MU in the fall season, collecting six singles wins and four doubles victories with junior Gillian Hush. Sophomore Kelly Barry is ranked No. 103 nationally.
Head coach Jody Bronson's squad finished last season with a 13-14 overall record, including a 9-1 record at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium. Junior Gillian Hush led MU with a 27-12 overall record, including a 20-7 dual record, while Barry collected 24 overall and 15 dual wins. Barry is currently ranked No. 103 nationally by ITA. The pair of seniors Rachael Hush and Christina Ruiz tallied a 24-6 overall doubles record, with 16 dual victories.
In the fall campaign, Barry led the team with singles wins in fall play, tallying an 8-6 record while the doubles pair of Rachael Hush and Ruiz won six doubles matches.
The UIC Flames (1-1) play Eastern Michigan on Friday before traveling to Marquette. In two matches against No. 53 Marshall and Morehead State, junior Linda Hricistova collected two singles wins, while junior Teona Tsertsvadze won both her doubles matches with two different partners.
Last season, UIC finished with a 20-4 overall record after advancing to the NCAA Tournament First Round and winning its 14th straight Horizon League Championship. Junior Mariya Kovaleva returns as reigning Horizon League Women's Tennis Player of the Year.
Marquette collected a 6-1 win over UIC last season in Milwaukee.
