Marquette women’s tennis team opens dual play on Jan. 28, taking on UIC at 10 a.m. Central and Green Bay at 5 p.m. Central at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
The UIC Flames began their dual play with a 5-2 win against Toledo on Jan. 21, taking five wins in singles over the course of the competition. Rachel Le Comber led the Flames with wins in both singles and doubles play. UIC finished last season with a 13-8 mark and a 6-1 loss at Marquette.
In-state foe Green Bay dropped its first match of the season 5-2 against Omaha on Jan. 20. Chiara Berg and Theresa Tebon notched the two singles wins for the Phoenix and the duo of Tebon and Tallie Piaskowski picked up Green Bay’s sole doubles win. The Phoenix are coming off of a 1-18 season and are looking to bounce back against Marquette on Saturday.
Last season, the Golden Eagles earned a 12-9 record, with a 7-2 record at home. Marquette will look to carry over its success at home to this season.
The Golden Eagles last played in the Hoosier Invitational Jan. 16 against Colorado, Abilene Christian and host Indiana. Double partners Paula Tormos Sanchez and Diana Tokar took both matches they competed in over the last day of the tournament. Tormos Sanchez also found success in singles play and freshman Isabella Franks won her match in straight sets.
Following the double-header against UIC and Green Bay, the Golden Eagles will head to Madison to take on in-state rival Wisconsin.
