Women's Tennis Takes to the Road for Two Weekend Matches

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team will look to extend its unbeaten streak this weekend when it plays at No. 46 Indiana and at IUPUI Saturday, Jan. 30. The Golden Eagles will take on the Hoosiers at 8:30 a.m. in Bloomington, Ind. and finish the day in Indianapolis against IUPUI at 3 p.m.

The Golden Eagles tallied home wins over UIC (6-1), Villanova (7-0) and Louisville (5-2) in the opening weekend of dual play. Head coach Jody Bronson earned her 300th career win with the 6-1 victory over UIC on Friday morning. Junior Christina Ruiz and sophomores Olga Fischer and Gillian Hush won their three opening singles matches, along with the doubles pair of Ruiz and classmate Rachael Hush.

Indiana (4-0), ranked No. 46 nationally by ITA, opened the season with four consecutive wins against Western Michigan, Butler, Miami (Ohio) and Ball State. With no ranked singles players or doubles teams, the Hoosiers and head coach Lin Loring compete a balanced lineup. Freshman Leslie Hureau, junior Myriam Sopel and sophomore Evgeniya Vertesheva each tallied four singles wins in as many matches, and the duo of senior Lindsey Stuckey and Vertesheva has won in all three doubles positions. Hureau and Vertesheva have won nine of the last 10, dating back to the fall season.

After facing the first nationally ranked team of the season in the morning, the Golden Eagles will continue to Indianapolis for play against the Jaguars. IUPUI (0-0) will host their first match of the season against Butler Saturday morning before the 3 p.m. match against Marquette at the West Indy Racquet Club.IUPUI finished the 2009 campaign eighth in the Summit League and 1-23 overall.
