MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team opens a seven-game homestand this weekend with matches against IUPUI, Northern Illinois, and Green Bay. The Golden Eagles will face-off against IUPUI Friday, Jan. 30 at 5 p.m., and continue play on Sunday, Feb. 1 against NIU and Green Bay at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively. The Golden Eagles (2-2, 0-0 BIG EAST) stand even in spring play, owning victories over Illinois-Chicago and UW-Milwaukee, 4-3 and 7-0, respectively. Marquette's two defeats have come at the hands of Top 30 teams, including No. 19 Michigan and No. 30 Indiana. Head coach Jody Bronson returns seven players from last year's squad that finished the season 14-13 overall and fifth at the BIG EAST Tournament.
In dual play, newcomer Olga Fischer and sophomore standout Rachael Hush each lead the team with .500 records at 2-2 apiece in dual play. In doubles action, the pair of freshman Paola Calderon and senior Robin Metzler has gone undefeated thus far, posting a 2-0 spring record.
The IUPUI Jaguars (0-2) opened the dual season with two 7-0 losses to SIU-Edwardsville and Illinois State. The match against the Golden Eagles is in the middle of a three-match road tilt for the Jaguars.
Northern Illinois (0-0) will open its dual season in the state of Wisconsin as it plays UW on Friday afternoon before its match against the Golden Eagles. Head coach Ryun Ferrell welcomes back five returning letterwinners, including last season's team most valuable player in senior Nao Umemura. In the fall, the Huskies sent three singles players to the ITA Regionals, where Marquette's own Christina Ruiz tallied a win over NIU sophomore Martina Schnapp.
The Phoenix return four upperclassmen returning, as well as two sophomores and one newcomers from a Phoenix squad that finished 3-16 a season ago. The Golden Eagles defeated Green Bay, 7-0, in the two team's last meeting on March 1 at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
