Golden Eagles Take On Northern Illinois and No. 32 Illinois This Weekend

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team will play a pair of teams from the Land of Lincoln as it hosts Northern Illinois Friday, Feb. 5 at 4 p.m. at Helfaer Tennis Stadium before traveling to No. 32 Illinois on Sunday, Feb. 7.

Marquette (4-1) tallied three straight home wins against UIC, Villanova and Louisville, before splitting road matches at Indiana and IUPUI. Illinois will be the second ranked team Marquette has faced in three matches. The Golden Eagles fell at No. 46 Indiana Saturday, 6-1.

Sophomore Gillian Hush leads Marquette with an undefeated singles record in singles play, 5-0, and a six-match dual winning streak dating back to last season. Hush has represented MU at the No. 4, 5 and 6 positions. The doubles pair of juniors Rachael Hush and Christina Ruiz have registered a team-best 4-1 mark in the spring, all from the top spot.

NIU (0-3) has lost to Wisconsin, Chicago and UIC to start the dual season. Sophomore Sara McLaughlin leads the Huskies with a 2-1 singles record, and enters play Friday on a two-match win streak. Third year head coach Ryun Ferrell's squad was picked to finish eighth of nine teams in the Mid-American Conference.

No. 32 Illinois (1-3) opened the season against four opponents ranked in the top 40 by ITA. The Fighting Illini fell at No. 11 Tennessee and at No. 26 Virginia, before taking on No. 20 Mississippi and No. 37 Texas A&M at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Clemson, S.C. Head coach Michelle Dasso's squad tallied a 4-2 defeat over the Aggies.

Freshman Rachael White, was ranked No. 33 in singles play the week of Jan. 5, but has lost all four singles matches this season at the No. 1 position. Junior Marisa Lambropoulous leads the Illini with a 3-0 dual singles record (11-5 overall). The duo of senior Megan Fudge and freshman Breanne Smutko is undefeated in dual play, with a 3-0 record from the No. 3 spot.
