Golden Eagles Host No. 71 Minnesota Sunday

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's tennis team opens a six game homestand Sunday, Feb. 6 when it hosts No. 71 Minnesota at 11 a.m. at Helfaer Tennis Stadium. The match against the Golden Gophers will be the third straight match against a nationally-ranked opponent.
Marquette (1-2) looks to bounce back from two losses last weekend at No. 45 Indiana, 5-2, and No. 50 Purdue, 6-1. In dual action, juniors Olga Fischer and Gillian Hush lead the Golden Eagles with two singles wins apiece. Fischer is a perfect 2-0 from the No. 2 spot, while Hush has not lost at No. 5 (1-0). On the doubles side, the pairs of Rachael Hush/Christina Ruiz and Gillian Hush/Chelsea Utting each boast two wins from the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, respectively. In the most recent ITA singles rankings, released on Jan. 4, sophomore Kelly Barry is No. 103 nationally.
No. 71 Minnesota (1-1) is led by nationally ranked singles player Natallia Pintusava (No. 51) who is 1-1 in dual play after recording 12 wins in the fall. Alessandra Ferrazzi and Yuliana Umanets each have two singles wins for Minnesota. In doubles action, the duo of Ferrazzi/Alexa Palen rank No. 84 in the Jan. 4 ITA rankings, but are winless in spring play. Pintusava/Umanets lead the Golden Gophers with two doubles win, both from the No. 2 spot.
Minnesota fell at No. 53 Marshall in their season opener before recording a 5-2 win against Kentucky. The Golden Gophers will compete at No. 23 Northwestern on Saturday before taking on Marquette in Milwaukee on Sunday.
