Women's Tennis Hosts No. 42 Louisville and No. 61 Iowa

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team will host No. 42 Louisville and No. 61 Iowa this weekend in the midst of a seven match homestand. Louisville and Marquette will face off at 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 6, while the Golden Eagles will take on the Hawkeyes Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
The Golden Eagles (5-2, 0-0 BIG EAST) head into this weekend's matches as winners of the their last three matches, sweeping IUPUI, Northern Illinois, and Green Bay, 7-0. Newcomers Paola Calderon and Olga Fischer have provided the Golden Eagles strong play as of late at the top of the lineup. Through seven matches, Calderon owns a 2-3 overall mark at No. 1, while Fischer is 1-0 at No. 1 and 2-0 at No. 2.
The Cardinals (2-2, 0-0 BIG EAST) enter the match with a No. 42 ranking in ITA national polls. Led by an All-BIG EAST doubles pair of seniors Bianca Gorbea and Natalia Baez, Louisville finished the 2008 season with a 16-8 record. Head coach Mark Beckham's squad opened the dual season with consecutive wins against Morehead State and Michigan State before falling in matches at Auburn and Boise State. A season ago, the Golden Eagles battled to a 5-2 loss at Louisville.
No. 61 Iowa (2-2) will be the third ranked opponent the Golden Eagles face in six matches. Much like Louisville, Iowa opened their spring season with back-to-back victories against Western Illinois and Northern Iowa before falling to two ranked teams in then-No. 61 Virginia Tech and then-No. 62 Princeton at the ITA Qualifiers in Texas. The Hawkeyes defeated Marquette last season in Iowa City, Iowa, 5-2.
