Women's Tennis Takes on Western Michigan and Iowa
Feb. 9, 2017
MILWAUKEE—The Marquette women’s tennis team will try to build off a 3-1 start in a pair of home matches this weekend against Western Michigan at 3 p.m. Central on Feb. 10 and Iowa at 5 p.m. Central on Feb. 11.
The Golden Eagles enter these two matches fresh off of a 6-1 win versus Milwaukee on Wednesday night. In that match, Marquette secured the doubles point and held serve in singles matches, winning all but the No. 6 matchup. Silvia Ambrosio, Paula Tormos Sanchez, Diana Tokar, Fleur Eggink and Courtney Hebard all dominated, taking each match in straight sets.
Western Michigan is 5-2 on the season and is coming off of a 7-0 home victory over UIC. In that match, the Broncos won the doubles point in straight matches and dominated singles play to earn the clean sweep. The Golden Eagles fell in a narrow 4-3 defeat on the road at Western Michigan last year and try to avenge the loss on their home court Friday afternoon.
The Iowa Hawkeyes bring their undefeated 5-0 record to Milwaukee Saturday evening and have only lost two total points in their first five games, blanking Creighton, Northern Illinois, Iowa State and Montana. Marquette looks to halt the Hawkeyes’ momentum and bounce back from the 6-1 loss at Iowa last season.
These matches mark the first two in a seven-game homestand in which the Golden Eagles will look to improve on their 3-1 record. Following this weekend’s action, Marquette will take on St. John’s at 2 p.m. Central on Feb. 17.
