Golden Eagles Travel to Western Michigan Friday, Host Illinois State and Green Bay Sunday

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team will take on three teams this weekend, traveling to Western Michigan Friday, Feb. 12 before hosting Illinois State and Green Bay in a Valentine's Day doubleheader in Milwaukee.

The Golden Eagles take on WMU at noon in Kalamazoo, Mich. Friday and return home to face ISU and Green Bay at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. respectively on Sunday, Feb. 14.

Marquette (5-2) opened the season with three consecutive wins before falling at No. 46 Indiana. The Golden Eagles came back to tally two more victories, but were defeated by No. 32 Illinois in their last time out. Head coach Jody Bronson's squad has not lost to an unranked team this season.

Sophomore Gillian Hush leads MU in singles action, posting a 6-1 dual record this season. Junior Christina Ruiz (5-1) and sophomore Olga Fischer (5-2) follow close behind Hush. Ruiz recorded the lone point for Marquette against Illinois Sunday, posting a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 5.

The duo of junior Rachael Hush and Ruiz has tallied a 5-2 doubles record in spring play, all at the the No. 1 spot. Gillian Hush and senior Maggie Wilson have helped the team at the No. 3 doubles spot, boasting a 4-2 record.

Picked to finish third in the Mid-American Conference, Western Michigan (5-2) returns reigning second-team All-MAC selection in senior Emily Dudzik. The Broncos finished 21-8 last season before falling in the MAC Tournament final. Dudzik is 2-4 in dual play this season, with all four losses coming at the No. 1 singles spot. Sophomores Rachel Denny (4-0) and April Kerr (2-0) boast undefeated records, while newcomer Jill Pastunink has a team-high five dual wins. The doubles team of Pastunink and Dudzik is 4-1 at the No. 1 spot, and Kerr and senior Yumi Matsuto have the same mark from the No. 2.

 

 

ISU (4-2) has won four of its last five after opening the season with a 7-0 loss at Purdue. Both Marquette and the Redbirds have played IUPUI this season, each winning 6-1. Head coach Chris Hoover returns a squad that finished 14-10 last season and placed third in the Missouri Valley Conference.

In-state foe Green Bay (2-2) is even on the season, defeating Western Illinois and Bradley and falling to Wisconsin and Northern Illinois. First-year head coach leads the Phoenix squad that finished seventh in the Horizon League last season, with a 5-13 overall record.

Marquette defeated WMU and ISU in close 4-3 matches last season in Milwaukee. The Golden Eagles recorded a 7-0 home win over the Phoenix last February.
