Marquette Tops Iowa State, 5-2

MILWAUKEE -  After dropping the opening doubles point, the Marquette University women's tennis team rallied in singles play to defeat Iowa State ,5-2, Friday night at Helfaer Tennis Stadium. The win improves the Golden Eagles to 2-3 on the season.


Iowa State (1-4) earned the first point of the day by taking two out of three doubles matches. Junior Gillian Hush and freshman Chelsea Utting picked up Marquette's lone doubles victory with a 8-1 win over Iowa State's Jenna Langhorst and Maria Charter.


Kelly Barry quickly notched the score up at 1-1 after defeating Erin Karonis in straight sets at No. 1 (6-1, 6-2). Moments later senior Christina Ruiz took care of Maria Chartier at No. 6 (6-2, 6-2) to give Marquette its first lead of the day. 


Simona Cacciuttolo captured the Cyclones only singles victory at No. 5 evening the match at 2-2. After dropping her first set, 1-6, Gillian Hush stormed back to win the second and third sets, 6-0, 6-2, and put the Golden Eagles back in the lead 3-2. 




With the score at 4-2, junior Paola Calderon sealed the victory for Marquette by defeating Tessa Lang in straights at No. 3 (7-6, 6-3) in the last match of the evening.


The Golden Eagles will continue their season-long six match homestand Sunday, Feb. 14 as they take on Western Michigan at 10 a.m. and Milwaukee at 5 p.m. CT. Follow along with live stats on
