Feb. 18, 2011

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team carries a three-match win streak into Saturday matches against No. 48 Iowa and Northern Illinois. Doubles action against the Hawkeyes starts at 10 a.m. on Feb. 19 before MU hosts NIU at 5 p.m.

The match against Iowa marks the fourth time this season Marquette competes against a team appearing in the ITA rankings. MU is winless against these opponents, falling at No. 50 Purdue, 6-1, at No. 45 Indiana (5-2) and against No. 71 Minnesota (4-3).

The Golden Eagles (4-3) defeated Iowa State, Western Michigan and Milwaukee in the last three matches at Helfaer Tennis Stadium last weekend. MU is 4-1 at home this season. Juniors Olga Fischer and Gillian Hush lead the team with five singles wins apiece. MU has won the doubles point four times this season, sweeping it twice. The duos of seniors Rachael Hush/Christina Ruiz (5-2) and freshman Chelsea Utting/Gillian Hush (4-3) own the most wins on the team.

Iowa, which fell from No. 30 in the Jan. 4 ITA rankings to No. 48 in the Feb. 14 edition of the poll, is 2-3 on the season and has lost three of its last four matches. Second-year head coach Katie Dougherty returns five letterwinners from last season's team, which saw a program-high ITA ranking of No. 18 and finished with a 17-7 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Junior Sonja Molar, who was ranked 39th by ITA in preseason, is ranked No. 81 nationally after finishing last season with 17 wins in dual action. She is 3-2 this spring, all from the No. 1 position. The doubles pair of Molnar and senior Jessica Young is ranked No. 34 nationally, and is undefeated in dual action (4-0). Last season, the Golden Eagles fell in Iowa City, 6-1, with then-freshman Kelly Barry recording the lone point for MU in singles play.

The Huskies' (1-5) lone win on the season came against Bradley, 6-1. NIU will travel to Green Bay on Friday before facing off against Milwaukee on Saturday evening. The squad, which returns five players from last season's 7-13 (1-7 MAC) effort, was picked to finish last of nine teams in the Mid-American Conference. Junior Sara McLaughlin is the top returner from last year, posting a 10-10 single duals record in the 2009-10 campaign. Marquette swept NIU in early February last season, 7-0, in Milwaukee.
