Marquette Hosts Western Michigan and IUPUI Saturday

MILWAUKEE- The Marquette Women's Tennis team (6-2, 0-0 BIG EAST) is set to host Western Michigan at 10 a.m. Central time and IUPUI at 5 p.m. this Saturday, Feb. 21 at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

The Golden Eagles are off to a strong start at 6-2, with both losses coming against ranked opponents (No. 52 Indiana and No. 44 Illinois).

Last weekend MU traveled to Indiana and Illinois to finish its BIG 10 swing. Sunday MU faced the Fighting Illini and dropped the match 5-2. Senior Ana Pimienta (6-2, 2-6, 6-3) and junior Erin Gebes (6-2, 3-6, 10-8) tallied the only points for MU. Both ladies outlasted their opponent and rallied in the third set notching the win.

Western Michigan (3-4) is coming off a 6-1 victory over Oakland University last Saturday. The Golden Grizzlies swept in doubles, led by senior Caroline Aleck and freshman Olivia Meyers (6-4). In singles No. 1 Meika Ashby downed her opponent 6-0, 6-3. The sophomore is 2-3 on court 1 on the season.

IUPUI (3-4) picked up a road win over Valparaiso narrowly winning 4-3 this past weekend. After dropping the doubles point, the Jaguars outlasted their opponents in singles winning four of the six matches. Junior Bobbi Modesto was the winning point. Valparaiso's Valeriia Lavrenchuk is the current Summit League Women's Tennis Player of the Week. The freshman from Ukraine went undefeated last week, topping opponents in the No.1 singles position.

Following this weekend's action, the Golden Eagles will travel to Minneapolis, Minnesota to face Iowa State on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 10 a.m. CT.
