Women's Tennis Travels to Hawkeye State for Two Weekend Matches

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team will travel to the Hawkeye State to take on Iowa and Iowa State in two matches in Iowa City this weekend. The Golden Eagles will face Iowa on Friday, Feb. 19 at 4 p.m. and continue against Iowa State at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20.
With two wins last Sunday, the Golden Eagles improved to 7-3 on the season. Sophomore Gillian Hush is 8-2 in dual singles play, while junior Rachael Hush tallied six total wins last weekend - three in both singles and doubles. The duo of Rachael Hush and classmate Christina Ruiz have been dominant at the No. 1 singles position, recording an 16-3 overall mark and 8-2 in the spring dual season.
In her first season, head coach Katie Dougherty leads a Hawkeye team (3-1) who ended last season 7-15 overall and 2-9 in Big Ten play. Reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year and All-Big Ten selection Sonja Molnar is ranked No. 87 nationally by ITA in singles. Last season, she concluded the season at No. 100, with an 18-4 record at the No. 1 singles position.
The Golden Eagles are 1-14 all-time against Iowa. In the two teams' last meeting, Iowa topped MU, 5-2, at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
Iowa State (3-2) and Marquette will compete in neutral Iowa City on Saturday. The Cyclones are led by junior Erin Karonis, who was an All-Big 12 selection a season ago. ISU finished last season 10-13 overall, 1-10 in Big 12 action.
Marquette owns the all-time series, 4-0. The two teams last played during the 1996 season where MU won in Ames, 7-2.
