Christina Ruiz Named Opus Student-Athlete of the Week

OpusMILWAUKEE - Senior Christina Ruiz of the Marquette University women's tennis team is the Opus Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Feb. 14-20.

Ruiz captured No. 1 doubles victories with Rachael Hush against No. 48 Iowa and Northern Illinois and won her only singles match of the weekend, 6-1-4-6, 6-1, over Iowa's Jessica Cohen.

The dual match win over the Hawkeyes was MU's first over a ranked opponent since it defeated Western Michigan on March 7, 2010.

Women's Tennis
Hush won three singles matches and a pair of doubles contests against Iowa State, Western Michigan and Milwaukee. She helped MU to a 4-3 win over the Broncos with her match-clinching point at No. 4 singles on Sunday, Feb. 12.

Feb. 7 

Tatiyiana McMorris Women's Basketball  McMorris hit a game-winning 3-pointer with 3.6 seconds remaining to defeat St. John’s, 55-52, on Feb. 5. For her performance in wins over the Red Storm and Villanova on Feb. 1, the Bronx, N.Y., native was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll for the second-consecutive week.
Jan. 31 

Jimmy Butler

Men's Basketball  Butler became the 42nd player in school history to reach the 1,000-point plateau with 21 points against No. 5 Connecticut on Jan. 25. The senior also netted 19 points in a win over No. 9/10 Syracuse on Jan. 29, MU's first victory over the Orange since joining the BIG EAST Conference.

Olga Fischer

Women's Tennis  Fischer helped Marquette open the dual season with a 4-3 victory over the University of Illinois-Chicago at Helfaer Tennis Stadium. The Berlin, Germany native mounted a come-from-behind victory at No. 2 singles to claim a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 victory on Sunday, Jan. 23.

Women's Basketball

Simmons earned the first BIG EAST Conference Weekly Honor Roll mention of her career after helping MU to wins over No. 6/7 West Virginia on Jan. 11  and at USF on Jan. 17. The Milwaukee native scored 14 points to hand the Mountaineers their first loss of the season and notched a double-double against the Bulls.
Jan. 10 Darius Johnson-Odom Men's Basketball Johnson-Odom tied a career-high with 29 points in a win at Rutgers on Jan. 5 and scored a team-high 20 points in a losing effort at No. 5 Pittsburgh on Jan. 8. He was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll
Jan. 3

Katherine Plouffe

Women's Basketball Plouffe was named the BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Week on Jan. 3 after helping the Golden Eagles to a title at Florida International's Fun and Sun Classic. The Calgary, Alberta, Canada native averaged 13.5 points and 6.5 rebounds while helping MU knock off FIU and Louisiana Tech.

Jae Crowder Men's Basketball Crowder was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Dec. 27 after leading MU to a 102-77 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Dec. 21. The junior forward had 22 points, five rebounds, three assists, a pair of steals and a block against the Delta Devils.

Women's Basketball

Weibel hit a school-record eight 3-pointers in Marquette's 75-46 victory over UNC-Asheville on Dec. 19. The senior guard was 8-of-11 from deep and scored 24 points in 22 minutes of action.
Dec. 13

Vander Blue

Men's Basketball Blue was named the BIG EAST Conference Rookie of the Week after scoring a career-high 21 points in a 86-50 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Dec. 7. The Madison, Wis., native also had five rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks against the Islanders.
Dec. 6 Lauren Darnall Track and Field Darnall shattered the Marquette indoor school record in the pole vault by reaching a height of 12 feet, 8 3/4 inches at Notre Dame's Blue and Gold Invitational. She bettered her previous personal best by over a foot and Carrie Schmid's school record by seven inches.
Nov. 29 Angel Robinson Women's Basketball Robinson averaged 26.5 points in two road games, including a season-high 32 points at Creighton. The senior guard also scored 21 points in a victory at Wisconsin on Nov. 24.
Nov. 22 Nikki Klingsporn

Women's Volleyball

Klingsporn was named to the 2010 BIG EAST Championship all-tournament team after helping MU to its second appearance in school history. The senior setter was also named First Team All-BIG EAST at the Conference's annual banquet. She recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 45 assists and 10 digs in the semifinals against tournament champion Louisville.
Nov. 15 Lisa Philbin Women's Soccer Philbin helped the Golden Eagles advance to the NCAA Championship Third Round with victories over Central Michigan and Wisconsin. On Nov. 14 Philbin scored the game-tying goal against Wisconsin in the second half to send the contest to overtime, before MU beat the Badgers 2-2 (5-4) in penalty kicks.
Nov. 8 Ciara Jones Women's Volleyball Jones was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll after leading MU to a five-set victory over Seton Hall on Nov. 7. The junior outside hitter landed 20 of her 40 attacks for kills in the win against the Pirates to hit .475 in the match. She also helped MU to a sweep of Rutgers on Nov. 6
Nov. 1 Rabbecka Gonyo Women's Volleyball Gonyo was named to the BIG EAST Conference Honor Roll for the first time in her career on Nov. 1 after helping MU to sweeps of Pittsburgh on Oct. 29 and West Virginia on Oct. 31. The senior hit .727 (9-1-11) against West Virginia and ended the weekend No. 1 in the NCAA in hitting percentage.
Oct. 25 Natalie Kulla Women's Soccer Kulla helped MU to its second BIG EAST Conference American Division Championship and a perfect 11-0 record in BIG EAST play with 2-0 shutouts over Syracuse on Oct. 22 and St. John's on Oct. 24 at Valley Fields.
Oct. 18 Ashley Beyer Women's Volleyball Beyer earned her third BIG EAST Conference Weekly Honor Roll nod of the season after helping MU to a perfect 2-0 week. Beyer notched a career-high 19 digs on Oct. 13 at Green Bay.
Oct. 11 Ashley Bares Women's Soccer Bares helped MU to a perfect 2-0 week, including a 1-0 win at Connecticut on Oct. 8 in which she scored the game-winning goal in the 71st minute. The wins against the Huskies and at Providence pushed MU's winning streak to seven matches and a school-record six straight on the road.
Oct. 4 David Check Men's Soccer Check was named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week for the second week in a row after helping the Golden Eagles to a 1-0-1 week. Marquette recorded a 1-0 shutout against Wisconsin on Sept. 28 and a 1-1 draw against No. 6/3 Connecticut on Sept. 30.
Sept. 27 Lauren Thut Women's Soccer Thut scored the game-winning goal in the 84th minute of MU's game at Pittsburgh on Sept. 26 to help the Golden Eagles to a 2-1 victory and a perfect 3-0-0 start to BIG EAST Conference play. She also fired two shots in MU's 2-1 win over West Virginia on Sept. 23.
Sept. 20 Rabbecka Gonyo Women's Volleyball Gonyo earned her fourth all-tournament nod of the fall at Northwestern's Wildcat Classic. The Ingleside, Ill., native helped MU to sweeps of Harvard on Sept. 17 and Charlotte on Sept. 18 before falling to the host Wildcats in four sets after the win over the 49ers. Gonyo hit .537 over the weekend.
Sept. 13 Ciara Jones Women's Volleyball Jones led Marquette to a pair of victories in the Marquette/Milwaukee Invitational over Milwaukee on Sept. 11 and Toledo on Sept. 12. The Orlando, Fla., native notched 43 kills in 10 sets over the weekend, including a then season-high 18 in the win over the Panthers.
Sept. 6 Olivia Johnson Cross Country Johnson captured the women's title at the Badger Classic over runners from Wisconsin, Northwestern and Northern Illinois. She won the four-kilometer race in 14:20.
Aug. 30 Nikki Klingsporn Women's Volleyball Klingsporn was named to the Golden Gopher Invite All-Tournament Team after helping MU to a runner-up finish at the event. Klingsporn notched a double-double of 40 assists and 10 digs against No. 6 Minnesota and was named the the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Aug. 30.
Aug. 23 Rachel Sloan Women's Soccer Sloan scored two goals in Marquette's season opening 5-0 victory over Idaho State on Aug. 20. She also helped MU to a 1-1 draw against Ohio State on Aug. 22 at Valley Fields.
Aug. 16 Lindsey Page Women's Soccer Page scored Marquette's lone goal in a 1-1 draw against the University of Wisconsin in the Golden Eagles' first game of the season.
Aug. 9 Junior Cadougan Men's Basketball

Cadougan earned most valuable player honors at the Scion Dental Milwaukee Summer Pro-Am, which finished play Sunday, Aug. 8 at the Al McGuire Center. He averaged over 20 points, eight assists and six rebounds in the first annual month-long tournament.

Aug. 2 Anthony Colaizzi Men's Soccer Colaizzi, a member of the Premier Development League's Thunder Bay Chill, claimed the Central Conference title with a 2-1 win over the Michigan Bucks and advanced to the semifinals of the PDL Tournament. The Chill will face the Baton Rouge Capitals on Aug. 6 and should they win they would face the Reading United or Portland Timbers in the championship game on Saturday, Aug. 7 on the Fox Soccer Channel.
July 26 Natalie Kulla Women's Soccer Kulla was one of two goalkeepers named to the U.S. U23 National Team earlier this summer and helped the United States to a championship at the Four Nations Tournament on July 12. 
July 19 Brice Cleland Cross Country  Cleland was named the 2009-10 BIG EAST Conference Scholar-Athlete Excellence Sport Award winner for men's cross country. A triple major in exercise science, psychology and theology, he is the only Marquette student-athlete to earn the honor which recognizes academic and athletic achievement as well as community service.
July 12 Kelly Kretz Men's Golf Kretz will compete in his third-straight U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship this week in Greensboro, N.C., after finishing as runner-up at the local qualifier in Hartford, Wis. The senior carded a two-round scored of 139 to finish one stroke behind Andy Hansen on June 19 at the Washington County Golf Course.
July 5 Vander Blue Men's Basketball Blue helped USA Basketball's Under-18 National Team to a Gold Medal at the Pan-American Games in San Antonio, Texas on June 30. Follows Lazar Hayward as the second MU student-athlete to compete internationally in the last two summers.
June 28 Peter Bolgert Track & Field Bolgert was named a 2010 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Second Team Academic All-American for track and field. The Sheboygan, Wis., native entered the 2010 spring semester with a perfect 4.0 grade point average as a mathematics and physics major.
