Feb. 26, 2010
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team will host a doubleheader against in-state rivals on Saturday, Feb. 27, taking on Wisconsin at noon and Milwaukee at 5 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium on the campus of Marquette University.
The Golden Eagles (7-5) enter the matches coming off a two-loss weekend at Iowa and Iowa State. Head coach Jody Bronson's squad has posted an undefeated record at home with six wins. Sophomore Gillian Hush leads the team with nine dual singles wins, including undefeated records at No. 4 and No. 5. The duo of juniors Rachael Hush and Christina Ruiz look for their tenth win of the dual season, boasting a 9-3 mark from No. 1.
Wisconsin (3-7) lost six matches in a row before tallying a win last weekend over Western Michigan. Leading the Badgers in singles play is freshman Hannah Berner, with a 7-2 dual record. Marquette has won just twice against UW, trailing the all-time series record, 20-2. Wisconsin lost 2009 All-Big Ten Team honoree Elizabeth Carpenter, but returns 2009 Sportsmanship Award selection in senior Katya Mirnova.
Milwaukee (2-6) enters the match with six consecutive losses after opening the season with wins against Western Illinois and IUPUI. The squad boasts two Panthers who have won three spring matches each: junior Sammi Schoen and freshman Brittany Skemp. Senior Kelly Drvaric earned All-Horizon League Second Team honors last season.
In 2009, MU tallied a 7-0 win against Milwaukee at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium and fell at Wisconsin, 5-2.
