Women's Tennis Hosts No. 33 Illinois and Connecticut

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team will host No. 33 Illinois on Saturday, Feb. 28, and Connecticut on Sunday, March 1 at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium. Doubles play against Illinois will begin at 11 a.m., and the conference match with the Huskies will start at 10 a.m.

Ranked No. 75 in the latest ITA poll, head coach Jody Bronson's squad has won two straight, and eight of their its 10 dating back to January. The Golden Eagles (10-3 overall, 3-0 BIG EAST) have tallied an 8-1 home record at Helfaer this season, thanks in large part to the play of freshman Olga Fischer. Fischer has recorded a 12-2 dual play record in the spring, and carries a 10-match winning streak into the weekend's matches. Her only defeats have come at the No. 4 singles spot, and she is 9-0 at the No. 2 singles position.

Illinois (7-2 overall, 0-0 conference) returns five singles starters and seven total letterwinners from a squad that went 12-11 (7-3 Big Ten) last season. After opening the season with a 2-2 record through four matches, Illinois has rallied to win five consecutive matches. Junior Megan Fudge boasts a 13-match winning streak dating to the fall season, and senior Shivani Davé has won eight straight with four during the dual season.

Connecticut (0-2 overall, 0-0 BIG EAST) will take on Marquette after traveling to fellow BIG EAST squad, DePaul, on Saturday. The Huskies opened the season with two losses, 7-0 and 6-1, to Stonybrook and Army, respectively. In his 12th season, head coach Glenn Marshall directs a squad that finished 9-8 overall last season, including an 11th place finish at the BIG EAST Championship. Junior Allison Campitiello returns with the Huskies' highest winning percentage (.950) last season. Marquette has won its last two matches with the Huskies including a 6-1 victory last season in Milwaukee.
