MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team opens a six-match road trip this weekend.
The Golden Eagles play at Seton Hall on Friday, March 4 at 12:30 p.m. CT and
continue at Rutgers on Sunday, March 6 at 9 a.m. CT.
MU (8-4) fell out of the national rankings after dropping a match at
Wisconsin, 6-1, on Feb. 23. The Golden Eagles had been ranked nationally for
the first time since the 2008-09 season, entering the ITA rankings at No. 69
on Feb. 22.
Gillian Hush leads the squad with a team-best eight singles wins in dual
play from the No. 2 through No. 5 spots. The doubles pair of seniors
Christina Ruiz and Rachael Hush jumped into national rankings on March 1 at
No. 79, thanks to a 10-2 spring record, all from the No. 1 position.
Seton Hall (1-6) opened its season with a convincing win over Marist, 6-1,
but has dropped six straight since. Four of the six Pirate losses have been
a 7-0 sweeps. The Golden Eagles and Pirates last met during the 2007-08
campaign with MU earning a 7-0 shutout.
Rutgers (5-3) has won two of its last three matches, claiming wins over
Buffalo (7-0) and Xavier (5-2). Junior Jennifer Holzberg and rookie Stefania
Balasa each have a team-leading 9-1 singles record in spring play. Last
season, MU defeated the Scarlet Knights, 5-2, at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
