March 13, 2010
MILWAUKEE - On a spring break road trip, the Marquette women's tennis team will play three matches in San Francisco, Calif., beginning on Sunday, March 14 against San Jose State and culminating on Friday, March 19 versus Santa Clara. The Golden Eagles will also take on host San Francisco on Tuesday, March 16.
Marquette (10-7) is 1-6 on the road this season and 1-0 at neutral sites, despite an 8-1 home record. Led by two-time BIG EAST Tennis Player of the Week Gillian Hush, the Golden Eagles have three players who have tallied double-digit single wins in the spring season, including freshman Kelly Barry and sophomore Olga Fischer. Juniors Rachael Hush and Christina Ruiz pace the doubles side for MU, posting a 12-4 record at the No. 1 spot.
San Jose State (5-4) is paced by junior Anna Guzman and freshman Chau Truong, the only two Spartans with winning dual singles records. Guzman has a 5-4 singles record, while Truong leads the squad with a 6-3 dual singles mark. The Spartans finished last season 13-14, and have five newcomers on the team along with five returning student-athletes to head coach Anh-Dao Nguyen-Church's team.
San Francisco (7-8) enters play wining five of the last six, highlighted by two 7-0 sweeps over Southern Utah and Portland. Most recently, the WCC team competed in the San Diego Tournament Friday through Sunday. Jenni Heinser, a WCC Preseason All-Conference selection, was named the WCC Women's Tennis Player of the Month for February. The junior has 12 singles wins on the season.
The Broncos of Santa Clara (8-3) have won their last four in a row, their second such streak of the season. Head coach Ben Cabell's squad will take on Northern Iowa before action Friday against Marquette. Santa Clara is without a senior on a roster that includes five freshmen, three sophomores and just one upperclassman in junior Carmen Pham. Last season, the Broncos finished the season 8-10 overall and lost two key seniors to graduation.
