March 16, 2015
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's tennis team returns to the Helfaer Tennis Stadium after its spring break trip where it made stops in Arizona for matchups with Arizona State University and Grand Canyon University.
The Golden Eagles sit at 8-5 heading into their final match before BIG EAST competition begins, but are a perfect 6-0 at home. MU's most recent blemish came against Grand Canyon, 4-3, in which the match came down to the final set between senior Ana Pimienta and her opponent.
Marquette is hosting a team for the first time since Feb. 21, where the squad knocked off Western Michigan 7-0.
The duo of Pimienta and junior Erin Gebes continues to impress, winning 9-of-12 doubles matches this year, while senior Ali Dawson and junior Aleeza Kaner have won 6-of-11. Both Pimienta and senior Vanessa Foltinger have posted 8-5 records in singles play so far this season, while freshman Paula Tormos Sanchez has won 9-of-13.
As a squad, MU has won 58 percent of singles matches and 60 percent of doubles contests.
Illinois State travels to Milwaukee at 2-9 on the year, with wins over Eastern Illinois and Indianapolis. The Redbirds share two common opponents with MU, suffering two defeats vs. Illinois and Wisconsin while the Golden Eagles split matches with both Big Ten foes.
Following the contest vs. ISU, Marquette opens up BIG EAST competition in Cincinnati, where it will take on Xavier on Saturday, March 21 and Cincinnati on Sunday, March 22.
