Marquette Tops Illinois State, 7-0
The Marquette women's tennis squad (9-5) got back to its winning ways on Tuesday afternoon with a 7-0 victory over Illinois State at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

Last time out, the Golden Eagles took a 6-1 decision at Drake, to improve their record on the season to 6-4. Against the Bulldogs, MU dominated throughout, claiming victories in the dual’s first six official matches before dropping the seventh.

On the season, Marquette has been carried by senior Aleeza Kanner, who has continued her hot start by winning her first seven singles matches of the season. Meanwhile, the tandem of senior Erin Gebes and freshman Silvia Ambrosio has been impressive for the Blue and Gold, as the pair owns a 13-2 record on the doubles circuit.

Illinois State is paced by junior Marcia Tere-Apisha, who currently sports a 16-4 record overall, including a perfect 4-0 mark on the No. 1 line. Sophomore Veronika Golanova has also been vital for the Redbirds having won her last two matches to improve her record in duals to 8-4.

Butler has struggled all season having won just once in their first 16 competitions, including being swept nine times. The Bulldogs have dropped their last nine matches since claiming their lone victory of the season, a 6-1 triumph over Indianapolis on Feb. 12.

After this weekend’s matchup, Marquette will hit the road again and travel to Florida on their spring break trip. On the trip, MU is slated for a pair of matches, with the first coming on March 23 against Cincinnati in Orlando, Fla., and the second on March 26 against Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Florida.
