Women's Tennis Embarks on Cincinnati Road Trip

Freshman Paula Tormos Sanchez leads MU with a 10-4 record in singles play this season.

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's tennis team begins its five-game road trip this weekend in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Golden Eagles will face Xavier on Saturday, March 21 at 3 p.m., and Cincinnati on Sunday, March 22 at 11 a.m. Central time.

MU enters the weekend 9-5 after sweeping Illinois State on Tuesday, March 17, at Helfaer Tennis Stadium. Senior Ana Pimienta fought back during singles to complete the sweep. Pimienta dropped the first set 3-6, won the second set 6-4 and then stormed back strong during the tiebreaker to win 12-10. Freshman Paula Tormos Sanchez currently leads Marquette in singles play with a record of 10-4, while Pimeinta is close behind at 9-5.

Xavier will come into the match with an 8-4 record, having won four out of its last five matches. On Wednesday, the Musketeers went on the road and swept Dayton, earning their fourth shutout victory of the season. Sophomore Sydney Liggins, a 2014 All-BIG EAST competitor and the reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, competes in the No. 1 singles spot for Xavier and has only dropped one singles point this season.

Cincinnati sits at 5-6 this season and has dropped three of its last four matches. On Monday, the Bearcats fell to Tulane on the road 6-1 as junior Kelly Poggensee-Wei was the only Cincinnati player to secure a point. Poggensee-Wei boasts a 9-2 record at No. 1 singles this year. The Bearcats also face Houston on Thursday, March 19, before meeting Marquette.

Following play in Cincinnati, the Golden Eagles travel to Indiana to face Butler on Saturday, March 28 at 10 a.m. and Notre Dame on Sunday, March 29 at 11 a.m.
