Rutherford, Ruiz Earn BIG EAST Tennis Player of the Week Honors

MILWAUKEE - Senior Mark Rutherford and junior Christina Ruiz were named BIG EAST Tennis players of the week announced today by the league office. It is the first honor for Rutherford and second consecutive player of the week nod for Ruiz.

Rutherford helped the Golden Eagles to a 2-0 mark last week, securing 4-3 victories at Loyola Marymount on March 19 and against Nevada on March 20. The senior clinched MU's victory over Loyola Marymount with a three-set win, rallying for a 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 decision in No. 2 singles in the final match of the day. He also helped the Golden Eagles earn the doubles point against Nevada when he teamed with sophomore Jonathan Schwerin in the top spot to win 8-6.

Ruiz extended her winning streak to four matches in No. 4 singles and six matches in No. 1 doubles, following a pair of wins last week. In Marquette's match against Santa Clara on March 19, the junior won in singles 6-4, 6-1. She also teamed with junior Rachael Hush for the 8-4 victory in doubles. Ruiz is 5-0 at No. 4 singles this season.
