MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's tennis team will take to the road this weekend for three matches against BIG EAST opponents. MU will face Connecticut on Friday, April 9 at 1 p.m. CT and West Virginia on Saturday, April 10 at 9 a.m. CT in Storrs, Conn., before traveling to Providence, R.I. later on Saturday to play Providence at 3 p.m. CT.
Marquette (14-7) has reeled off four consecutive wins, including a 7-0 shutout over Illinois State on April 3. Paola Calderon, Rocio Diaz and Rachael Hush each claimed three victories over Chicago State, IUPUI and Illinois State on April 2 and 3, and are 8-2 in their last ten singles matches.
The Golden Eagles are 3-6 in dual matches away from the Helfaer Tennis Stadium this spring, but each road victory came against BIG EAST opponents Seton Hall (March 4), Rutgers (March 6) and Cincinnati (March 27).
Connecticut (5-7) has dropped three of its last four, all of which were against BIG EAST teams. Head coach Glenn Marshall has mixed youth with experience this spring by pairing freshman Jennifer Learmouth and senior Emily Herb together at the No. 1 doubles spot.
West Virginia (7-11) will look to snap a two-match losing skid this weekend. The Mountaineers last victory was a 6-1 decision at South Carolina State on March 23. Senior Ashley Pilsbury, who led WVU in wins last year with 30, has often been slotted at the No. 2 and 3 spots for the Mountaineers. WVU plays UConn on April 9 before squaring off with Marquette.
Providence (2-9) ended a nine-match losing streak with back-to-back wins over Siena, 5-2, on April 2 and Albany, 6-1, on April 4. Sophomore Marisela Aviles-Duron, 4-7 in dual matches this spring, has played every singles match of her career at the No. 1 spot. The Friars will take on St. John's on Thursday, April 7 before facing Marquette.
The Golden Eagles return home to host DePaul and Notre Dame on April 15 and 17 at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
