MILWAUKEE—The Marquette women’s tennis team is heading East for a two-game road trip this weekend as it faces off against two BIG EAST opponents, tackling St. John’s on Friday at 11 a.m. central time and Seton Hall on Saturday at 12 p.m. CT.

The Golden Eagles (10-6) enter this weekend’s matchups after falling 6-1 to Xavier last weekend. Against the Musketeers, Marquette’s only point came in doubles play after the squad took two of three matches. The pair of Aleeza Kanner and Leoni Daems shut out Xavier, 6-0, in their match and Diana Tokar and Paula Tormos Sanchez secured the point with a 7-5 victory. With their win, Tokar and Tormos Sanchez improved to 7-1 as a team and won their sixth match in-a-row.

On the singles side, Xavier easily won three matches but Tokar, Tormos Sanchez and Silvia Ambrosio each battled in the other three matches to force three sets before ultimately falling.

Ambrosio, starter at the No. 1 spot, and Erin Gebes, starter at the No. 2 spot, will lead the Golden Eagles into the contest with identical 10-6 records. Ambrosio and Gebes also fill the No. 1 spot for doubles and will carry a 9-3 record into the match. Winners of six in-a-row, Tokar and Tormos Sanchez will look to continue their hot streak as the No. 2 pairing.

St. John’s (9-6) comes into Friday’s matchup after beating Albany 4-2. The Red Storm are led by No. 1 Natallia Vavulina and No. 2 Anna Morozova who have matching 6-1 records. No. 3 Irina Preotescu rides a hot streak into this weekend, after winning three in-a-row to improve to a 4-2 record.

Following Friday’s tilt, the Golden Eagles will cross state lines and head to New Jersey on Saturday to take on Seton Hall (7-6). The Pirates will look to build off a 5-2 win vs. LIU Brooklyn and secure their first conference win. No. 2 Hannah Liljekvist leads the way with a 9-4 record. Julia Keenan also is 9-4 and seven of her nine victories have come in straight sets as No. 5.

After this weekend’s matchups, Marquette will wrap up their regular season Friday, April 22 at DePaul. The showdown will start place at 6 p.m. CT and marks the Golden Eagle’s last match before the BIG EAST Championships.
