Fleur Eggink Wins BIG EAST Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

April 11, 2018

NEW YORK—Marquette University women’s tennis sophomore Fleur Eggink has been named the BIG EAST Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week award after her strong performances last week guided Marquette to a 2-0 record and extended its win streak to five matches.

Eggink won in straight sets out of the third singles slot and won the top doubles pairing with Natalija Popovic in a 4-0 win over Creighton. She also proved the difference-maker in the narrow 4-3 win versus Xavier, as she clinched the deciding point in her singles match while also winning in doubles with Popovic out of the top spot, which secured the doubles point for the Golden Eagles.

The award marks the first-ever individual recognition for Eggink, who has a 7-2 record in singles play so far this season. Her pairing with Popovic has also proved solid this season, with a 5-4 mark out of the top slot.

The Golden Eagles (10-7) head to the east coast this weekend with an eye on improving the season-high win streak to seven. They will first play at Seton Hall Friday, April 13 at 12 p.m. Central time before heading to Queens to battle St. John’s Sunday, April 15 at 11 a.m. CT.
