MILWAUKEE- The Marquette University women’s tennis team is set to conclude regular season play this Friday, April 22, when the squad travels to Chicago, Ill., for a 6 p.m. Central time showdown against BIG EAST foe DePaul at Lakeshore Sport and Fitness.
Marquette (11-7) will return to the court for the first time since splitting a two-game East coast trip against St. John’s and Seton Hall on April 8 and April 9, respectively. The Golden Eagles dropped the weekend’s first matchup against the Red Storm, 6-1, but rallied to capture a 5-2 victory in the trip’s final leg against the Pirates.
Against St. John’s, sophomore Paula Tormos Sanchez claimed the Blue and Gold’s lone point of the match by pulling out a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 victory at the No. 4 spot. The script was much different when MU traveled to South Orange, N.J., as the Golden Eagles used victories from Silvia Ambrosio on court No. 1, Tormos Sanchez at the No. 4 spot, Aleeza Kanner on court No. 5 and Courtney Hebard at the No. 6 slot to move past Seton Hall.
After a pair of victories last time out, Tormos Sanchez now owns a 12-3 record on the season when competing at the No. 4 spot. Kanner’s victory on court No. 5 against the pirates lifted her record to 10-3 at the spot on the season, while Ambrosio continued her impressive freshman season with the victory at the No. 1 spot against SHU, claiming her eighth victory in her last ten tries.
DePaul (11-7) will welcome Marquette having won their last four matches and seven of their last eight overall. The Blue Demons currently own an unscathed 5-0 record in BIG EAST play after topping Seton Hall, 5-2 in the team’s last contest. DPU is led by senior Rebeca Mitrea, who owns the university’s program record with 215 overall wins. Yulia Shupenia has also been an integral part of the DePaul lineup, as the junior sports a 10-2 mark at the No. 1 spot this season.
Following the meeting with DePaul, Marquette will head to Cayce, S.C., to compete in the 2016 BIG EAST Women’s Tennis Championship. The tournament’s quarterfinal round is set to take place on April 28, followed by the semifinals on April 29, and the finals on May 1. All match times and opponents for the BIG EAST Championship are yet to be announced.
