Women's Tennis Advances in BIG EAST Tournament
April 20, 2007 TAMPA, Fla. - The Marquette women's tennis team captured the doubles point and rattled off three consecutive singles victories to defeat no. 12 seed Rutgers, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament at the Varsity Tennis Center in Tampa, Fla., Friday afternoon. The Golden Eagles will face top seed Notre Dame at Noon ET in the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals Saturday. "We needed everyone to be out there today fighting," said head coach Jody Bronson. "To be able to play for a top-four spot in the conference was a goal of ours from the start of the season. We finished 11th last season, so the team is very excited to be in this position. We have worked so hard to get to this point and I am very proud of them. " Marquette secured the doubles point by winning the first two matches. No. 3 doubles did not finish due to MU claiming the first two. At no. 1 doubles, sophomore Lauren Little and junior Shannon Brown took down Katherine Arlak and Katrina Elder-Bush, 8-3. The no. 2 doubles tandem of junior Maria Calbeto and freshman Kylie Moore defeated its counterpart, 8-5, to give Marquette the early lead. The Golden Eagles continued to roll in singles action taking wins at no. 4, 5 and 6 singles. Brown returned to her winning ways at no. 6 singles by dismissing Christine Tran, 6-4, 6-2. Brown was first off the court with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Christine Tran at no. 6 singles. Sophomore Robin Metzler had her way with Lauren Edelschein at no. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-2, leaving Marquette to lead 3-0. Calbeto took care of business at no. 4 singles to give Marquette the win. She took down Caitlin Baker 6-2, 6-3. Little, Moore and junior Erin Watkins did not finish their matches because of Marquette's wins at the bottom three singles slots. Marquette 4, Rutgers 0
