Christina Ruiz Earns BIG EAST Tennis Player of the Week Honors

San Francisco Edges Marquette, 4-3

Golden Eagles Defeat San Jose State, 6-1, Sunday

April 25, 2007

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Following the Marquette women's tennis team's fourth place finish at the BIG EAST Tournament in Tampa, Fla., MU's no. 1 doubles tandem of junior Shannon Brown and sophomore Lauren Little was named to the all-tournament team. The athletes were voted on by each institution's head coach who cannot vote for their own player at the conclusion of the tournament.

The twosome faired well at the BIG EAST Tournament, going 2-0 at the top doubles slot. Brown and Little took down Rutgers' Katrina Elder-Bush and Katherine Arlak, 8-3, in the quarterfinals and defeated Louisville's Jo-Ann Aerde and Natalie Laszkowski, 8-4, in the third-place match.

In conference play the duo turned in an even 2-2 record and were 10-10 overall in spring play.

"This is just awesome for these two to be named all-tournament," said head coach Jody Bronson. "It is a testament to them working together as a team and for the level they are able to compete at. They had a great win over Louisville in their final match. I very proud of them and I think it is very deserving."

USF took home the league's two top honors; BIG EAST Coach of the Year and Most Outstanding Tournament Player. Head coach Agustin Moreno led the Bulls to a come from behind upset victory over top-seed Notre Dame, 4-3, in the championship match. Shadisha Robinson, the tournament's most outstanding player, did not lose a match in the tournament and downed Notre Dame's Catrina Thompson, ranked no. 26 in the nation, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
