Women's Tennis Celebrates 2009-10 Season

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team held its annual postseason awards banquet on Sunday night to honor the 2009-10 squad's accomplishments. Sophomore Gillian Hush, junior Christina Ruiz and senior Elly Strother each were honored for their work on and off the court.
Hush was named the team's Most Valuable Player and Most Improved Player, while senior Elly Strother earned the Dedication Award and junior Christina Ruiz received the Sportsmanship Award. The Golden Eagles finished 13-14 overall, including a 9-1 record at home.
In her second season, Hush led the team with overall and dual singles wins, tallying a 27-12 overall record and 20-7 dual mark. She twice earned BIG EAST Player of the Week honors on March 3 and March 10. Hush paired with three different partners to earn a 23-14 overall doubles record. Eleven of those wins came with classmate Paola Calderon, while nine matches were won with senior Maggie Wilson. Along with sister Rachael, the two were recognized with the Chas Mulcahy Sportsmanship Award at the 2009 Milwaukee Tennis Classic in September.
Strother closed out her final season with five singles wins in dual play, and nine overall singles victories. In doubles play, she was 2-3 overall with four different partners. On senior day against Rutgers, Strother clinched the match point at No. 6 singles, winning 6-3, 6-4. She has been a four-year contributor on the team earning 35 career singles wins and eight career doubles victories.
Ruiz was among the top five on the team in singles wins, posting an overall 17-14 record and 11-9 dual mark. With classmate Rachael Hush, the two paired together to earn a team-best 24-6 doubles record, including a 16-5 mark at the top spot. The duo claimed the women's doubles championship at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, going undefeated in the three-day event. Ruiz also captured BIG EAST Player of the Week honors twice on March 17 and March 24.
