NEW YORK--Marquette women's tennis freshman Natalija Popovic has been named 2018 BIG EAST Women's tennis Rookie of the Year, and selected to the All-BIG EAST First Team, while sophomore Fleur Eggink earned second team honors, the league office announced on Monday.
This is the second consecutive season that Marquette had two players earn All-BIG EAST honors.
Popovic stormed into Marquette with a stellar first season wearing Blue and Gold. She played at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, amassing a 14-7 dual record combined, with an impressive 6-1 mark against league foes. Popovic teams with fellow all-conference teammate Eggink in doubles and the duo earned a 5-1 mark against BIG EAST opponents.
Eggink continued her strong play from last season finishing with an 8-6 singles record, including a match-clinching win over Xavier, which gave the Golden Eagles their 10th win of the season. She was named BIG EAST Athlete of the Week following that performance. Along with Popovic,
Marquette finished the season with a 12-10 record and advanced to the BIG EAST semifinals for the third time in four years.
