Marquette University women’s tennis freshman Silvia Ambrosio was tabbed as the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year the league announced on Thursday. The rookie was also one of just three players to earn a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST Team.

Ambrosio made an immediate impact on the Golden Eagles and played the entire season at the No. 1 position in both singles and doubles. With Erin Gebes, the duo compiled a 14-4 record to lead MU in doubles, while Ambrosio collected a 12-4 dual singles record, including four victories over BIG EAST opponents.

In the final week of the season, Ambrosio earned BIG EAST Player of the Week honors after defeating DePaul’s No. 85 Yuliya Shupenia in singles action. The Frankfurt, Germany native, also helped Marquette to a victory over No. 75 Cincinnati earlier in the season.

“I am so pleased to see Silvia receive this award,” head coach Jody Bronson said. “Having to step in at the No. 1 position as a freshman is very difficult, but she handled it well and excelled. Her contributions to our singles and doubles victories helped us have a winning season.”

The Golden Eagles celebrated the 2015-16 campaign with an annual banquet last Friday where team awards were handed out. Ambrosio was selected as the squad’s Most Valuable Player for her excellent play in her first year on the squad.

Sophomore Paula Tormos Sanchez was named the Most Improved Player for the second-straight season and totaled a 12-4 dual record at the No. 4 singles position after playing steady at the No. 5 slot a year ago. She also moved up to the No. 2 doubles spot and notched a 9-2 dual record with Diana Tokar.

Gebes earned the Dedication Award for the second consecutive year and also earned Marquette’s Academic Award. Gebes collected 10 victories at No. 2 singles this season and helped Marquette maintain its strong doubles play with 14 victories in the No. 1 position. She will graduate with a degree in accounting and operations and supply chain management.

Aleeza Kanner wrapped up her four years with Marquette and was given the Sportsmanship Award. For the first time since her freshman season Kanner was a main fixture in the singles lineup and finished with 10 victories at the No. 5 position and totaled 10 wins in doubles matches.

The Golden Eagles finished the year with a 12-9 record and advanced to the BIG EAST Quarterfinals as the No. 5 seed.
