MILWAUKEE - Marquette University women's tennis senior Gillian Hush has been named the recipient of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship for the Midwest Region.
The award goes to a Division I women's player in each region who displays inspiring dedication and commitment to her team, and enhanced her squad's performance while exemplifying the spirit of college tennis.
"I am very proud of how Gillian approached this year," said Marquette head coach Jody Bronson. "She wanted to make sure this team had a great experience and that they would be led in the right direction. She showed our team, day in and day out, what it takes to be a great player and a great teammate. She set an example and I am confident the returning players will continue that leadership in the coming year."
Following the completion of the 2010-11 season, Hush took on a team leadership role by setting an example of exceptional hard work and sportsmanship, while making her teammates better throughout the 2011-12 season.
Hush will be considered for the national award to be selected by the ITA National Awards Committee and honored at the 2012 NCAA Championships.
Hush finished her career at Marquette ranked sixth on the all-time singles list with 81 wins and tied for fifth on the doubles list with 89 wins. Hush posted an overall record of 18-17, while playing at the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles positions. Hush and Olga Fischer teamed to form a formidable doubles duo playing recording a 10-8 mark.
