Women's Tennis Schedule is Unveiled
Aug. 2, 2016
MILWAUKEE--The Marquette University women’s tennis squad has revealed its schedule for the upcoming 2016-17 season, head coach Jody Bronson announced Tuesday.
The fall slate will begin with the 41st annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic, which will be held September 16-18, at the Town Club in Fox Point, Wisconsin. The eight-team invite features a unique layout, as it is one of the few tournaments to be played on clay courts. The tournament field consists of a total of eight squads, with four on the men’s side as well as four women’s programs.
Marquette will continue the fall portion of their schedule with the Minnesota Gopher Invite, which will take place in Minneapolis, Minnesota, beginning on Sept. 23 and running through the 25th.
The Golden Eagles will experience a month-long hiatus before returning to the court for the ITA Midwest Regionals in East Lansing, Michigan, on Oct. 20. Last season, Erin Gebes and Silvia Ambrosio advanced to the round-of-16 before dropping a tough, 8-6 decision to Northwestern. Following the ITA’s MU will conclude the fall portion of its schedule at the Juan Varon Tournament in Daytona Beach Fla., which spans from Oct. 28-30.
The spring season will open on Jan. 14 in Bloomington, Indiana, where Marquette will compete in the Hoosier Invitational. This invite will conclude tournament play for MU until the BIG EAST Championships.
Marquette will begin dual play with a pair of matches at Helfaer Tennis Stadium on Jan. 28. The Golden Eagles will match-up with Illinois-Chicago and Green Bay at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
The schedule rolls on as the Golden Eagles take a trip to Madison to take on in-state foe Wisconsin on Feb. 4, before returning to the friendly confines of Helfaer Tennis Stadium for seven consecutive matches.
The season-long home stand beings with a match against Milwaukee on Feb. 8, and features contests against Western Michigan and Iowa before the Blue and Gold opens BIG EAST play against St. John’s on Feb. 17. MU will renew competition with Minnesota on Feb. 25, before closing out its stay at Helfaer with contests against Northern Illinois and Drake on Feb. 26 and March 4, respectively.
MU will travel to California from March 14-16 to take on UC-Riverside and UC-Northridge, before heading out East to continue the BIG EAST slate with match-ups against Xavier (March 19) and Butler (April 1). The Golden Eagles will make their second trip to Bloomington, Ind., on April 2 for another dual with the Hoosiers before heading to Omaha, Nebraska for a conference match against Creighton, and a non-conference tilt with Nebraska-Omaha on April 8 and 9, respectively.
Marquette’s final road trip of the regular season will be to South Carolina, as MU will take on College of Charleston (April 13) and South Carolina State (April 15) before returning to Helfaer Tennis Stadium to conclude the regular season with a BIG EAST contest against DePaul.
The Golden Eagles will return to South Carolina for the BIG EAST Championships April 27-30, for the second consecutive season. Last year, Marquette fell to Georgetown, 4-0, in the tournament’s opening round before topping Creighton, 4-0, in the consolation match.
