The Marquette University men’s and women’s tennis programs will open their respective 2012-13 campaigns this weekend (Sept. 14-16) at the 37th Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic at The Town Club in Fox Point, Wis.

Teams competing on the men’s side are MU, Ball State, DePaul and Wisconsin. The women’s competition consists of MU, Detroit, Western Michigan and Xavier. Play begins at 9 a.m. each morning with singles and doubles competition. The Marquette men’s team opens play with doubles action against Wisconsin on Friday at 11 a.m., while the women’s squad does the same versus Xavier at 1 p.m.

“It’s really exciting to be starting this season, especially at an event like the Milwaukee Tennis Classic,” men’s head coach Steve Rodecap said. “Our guys are ready to go and it’s a good opportunity to evaluate where we are as a team, even though we didn’t have a lot of prep time going in.”

The Golden Eagles return seven letterwinners from last year’s squad, including All-BIG EAST performer Dan Mamalat. Freshmen Gleb Sklyr (Ramat-Gan, Israel) and Javier Varela Hernani (Pontevedra, Spain) also join the roster.

The Marquette women return four letterwinners, with junior Rocio Diaz the only upperclassman on the roster. Four freshmen join the roster in 2012-13, with hometowns spanning from Phoenix, Ariz., to Barcelona, Spain.

“I can’t think of a better way to kick off our season than with the 37th annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic,” women’s head coach Jody Bronson said. “We have an opportunity to showcase our players and bring collegiate tennis to the Milwaukee community.”

At the conclusion of the weekend’s play, a champion will be determined in both singles and doubles competition and a sportsmanship award will distributed to both a men’s and a women’s player.
