MU Hosts 41st Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic

Sept. 12, 2016

MILWAUKEE - Both Marquette University men's and women's tennis teams will commence their 2016-17 seasons Sept. 16-18 at the 41st Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic. The event it hosted by Marquette University and held at the Town Club in Fox Point, Wis.

"The MTC is always a great way to start the season," head men's coach Steve Rodecap said. "The format allows us to get a large number of matches in and playing on clay makes for a unique weekend. The staff at the Town Club is always very welcoming and does a great job with the event."

Six teams will be represented in the MTC. Both men's and women's teams from Marquette, Wisconsin and Ball state will see action, followed by Navy for the men's teams. Boise State will also be competing on the women's side.

"The Milwaukee Tennis Classic has been a great tennis event for over 40 years for Marquette and the Milwaukee community," head women's coach Jody Bronson said. "Our team is looking forward to kicking off our season against Wisconsin, Ball State and Boise State at the Town Club."

The tournament is held in a round-robin format of singles and doubles play with a point system in place. The player with the most points come Sunday will be announced champion for men's singles/doubles and women's singles/doubles.

Daniel Fernandez, a senior on last year's squad, claimed the men's singles championship with a win over Wisconsin in the 40th Annual MTC.

Play begins on Friday, Sept. 16 at 9 a.m. CT with men's singles and women's doubles. On Sunday, champions will be announced and the MTC Sportsmanship Award will be distributed.

Over the past 40+ years, sportsmanship has been a key role in the tournament's format. Marquette has compiled eight MTC Sportsmanship Awards in the past 10 years alone and most recently in 2014 (Ana Pimienta).

The men's squad boasts seven returners and the women's top-returner is Paula Tormos Sanchez. The junior led MU with 13 singles victories during the season last year.
