The Marquette University men’s and women’s tennis teams opened their respective 2013-14 campaigns Friday morning with singles and doubles action at the 38th Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic.

The eight-team event, which runs through Sunday afternoon, is being hosted on the clay courts of The Town Club in Fox Point, Wis. Play resumes Saturday morning at 9 a.m. CT.

After opening play with doubles action in the morning session, the MU men’s squad took on Ball State in singles action. The Golden Eagles claimed four of the seven matchups, including first career victories for freshmen Nick Dykema and Krystiyan Trukov. Both players cruised to straight-set decisions.

Also posting singles wins were senior Dan Mamalat and junior Vukasin Teofanovic at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively.

The women’s squad swept all four of its doubles contests to open the tourney, posting a trio of wins against Colorado State. MU’s Erin Gebes and Ana Pimienta led the way, earning an 8-5 decision at the top spot. Marquette also claimed a victory against Western Michigan.

Singles competition against FIU wrapped up the afternoon session for the women’s team.
