Marquette Opens At 37th Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic
Sept. 14, 2012
The Marquette University men's and women's tennis teams opened their respective 2012-13 campaigns Friday afternoon at the 37th Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic at The Town Club in Fox Point, Wis.
The eight-team event includes singles and doubles competition and concludes Sunday afternoon with an awards presentation for individual champions. Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.
The women's team opened with doubles action against Xavier and claimed victories in three of the four matches. MU's freshman class was involved in each of the wins, with newcomers Erin Gebes, Aina Hernandez Soler and Laia Hernandez Soler each picking up their respective first victories.
The women's team is currently on the court in singles against Detroit. Details to follow.
After doubles competition against rival Wisconsin, the men's squad faced head coach Steve Rodecap's alma mater Ball State in singles action. A trio of Golden Eagles claimed straight-set victories over the Cardinals. Sophomore Vukasin Teofanovic made quick work of BSU's Dalton Albertin at the No. 1 position and both junior Logon Collins and freshman Javier Varela Hernani did the same at the No. 2 and No. 6 positions, respectively.
Sophomore David Packowitz battled at the No. 3 spot before falling to former event champion Cliff Morrison.
"I was pleased with the way we responded in singles to conclude the day," Rodecap said. "Vukasin was really impressive from the beginning and Logon was able to take control early. I was happy to see Javier get his first win as a Golden Eagle and David might not have won, but he validated his efforts on the court in practice leading up to this weekend.
"We have plenty of tennis left this weekend and I am looking forward to seeing our success continue," Rodecap added.
