The 38th Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic, an eight-team event hosted by the Marquette men’s and women’s tennis teams, continued Saturday at The Town Club under perfect weather conditions.
The three-day tournament will conclude Sunday afternoon. Individual champions will be crowned in both singles and doubles and a sportsmanship award will also be distributed. Play resumes at 9 a.m. CT.
The MU women’s team opened its day by splitting six singles matchups with Western Michigan. Claiming wins for the Golden Eagles were junior Ana Pimienta and sophomore Erin Gebes at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively, and sophomore Laia Hernandez Soler. Each of the wins came in straight sets.
The women’s squad completed the day with doubles action against FIU and WMU. MU’s top tandem of Pimienta/Gebes managed to post an 8-4 decision, but the Golden Eagles dropped the other two matchups.
The men’s squad opened action on Saturday with an impressive effort in singles, claiming six of the seven contests. In the matches MU won, the team dropped a total of just one set. Senior Dan Mamalat and junior Vukasin Teofanovic switched spots at the top two positions from Friday’s lineup, but were both still able to claim straight-set wins for the second-straight day.
Each player remains in the hunt for the tourney title entering singles play against rival Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon. Also earning wins for Marquette were Logon Collins, Nick Dykema, Krystiyan Trukov and Gleb Sklyr.
MU concluded the afternoon with doubles action against Ball State.
