Women's Tennis Schedule for 2009-10 Season Released

Sept. 15, 2009

Marquette head women's tennis coach Jody Bronson announced today the Golden Eagles' schedule for the upcoming season. The schedule includes five teams that competed in the NCAA Tournament last season, along with 15 repeat opponents from last year's 17-10 effort.

"The advantage you have if you've played a team before is that you know most of the players on their team and how they play, so you somewhat can prepare for it," said Bronson. "Obviously the other part of that is that your players have improved and have worked hard so that they're going to be better than when they played them the first time. That's an advantage to have some kind of a familiarity with the other team."

Marquette will take part in four fall tournaments during September, October and early November before the team season begins its dual season in late January. The Golden Eagles will host the Milwaukee Tennis Classic along with the men's tennis team, and will travel to the Michigan Tournament in early October and the ITA Region II Championships in late October.

"The things that we're going to focus on in practice is what we're going to want these guys to do in the individual season," said Bronson about the fall. "Obviously, it's important because the matches are for their record, and if they have a good fall they have a chance to be ranked, so they definitely want to be successful and win, but they also have to be willing to grow their game and show they can do something other than hitting the ball hard."

Bronson's squad will conclude the fall individual season at the Purdue Tournament in early November, the first time in five seasons the team has competed that last in the fall. During the 2004-05 campaign, the Golden Eagles hosted the Milwaukee Tennis Classic in early November.

"Playing in the Purdue Tournament presents a good opportunity. They had some strong teams and I think the regionals are quite early, where you're not even going through the end of October. I thought we would start practice a week later, compete a week-and-a-half longer, and because the competition level was going to be really good, I thought it was a great opportunity to give these guys another opportunity to come up against some ranked players. It's also the last tournament of the season then, so we can see how they have progressed by how well they perform against these ranked players," said Bronson.

Marquette will open the team season in late January, taking on UIC, Villanova, Louisville, Northern Illinois, Illinois State, Green Bay, Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and Miami (OH) before a six-match road trip. The Golden Eagles will return home to host Rutgers for senior day on April 10 at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium before traveling to Notre Dame for a match before taking part in the BIG EAST Tournament in Notre Dame, Ind.

The Golden Eagles will compete against Indiana, IUPUI, Illinois, Western Michigan, Iowa, Iowa State, Cornell, Oklahoma and Wichita State on the road. Over spring break in March, the team will travel to California to match up against San Jose State, San Francisco and Santa Clara.
