MU Tennis Teams Open 2010-11 At Milwaukee Tennis Classic
Sept. 17, 2010
The Marquette University men’s and women’s tennis teams opened their respective 2010-11 campaigns Friday afternoon at the 35th Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic, hosted by The Town Club.
The eight-team field will participate in singles and doubles action through Sunday afternoon. Play begins at 9 a.m. each day and Marquette fans are encouraged to attend. Admission is free. Following the conclusion of play on Sunday, a champion and runner-up will be determined in singles and doubles competition and a sportsmanship award will also be distributed.
The men’s squad opened its season by claiming five of its eight singles matches with Ball State. Included in those wins was a trio of straight-set decisions. Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley played the No. 1 spot for MU for the first time in his career and responded with a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Ball State’s Zane Smith. Four Golden Eagle newcomers made their respective debuts on Friday and freshmen Logon Collins and Dan Mamalat were able to emerge victorious in their collegiate debuts.
Doubles action concluded the day for the men’s squad, which faced Northwestern and Ball State. With a new doubles tandem at every position, the Golden Eagles were unable to secure a win at any of the three positions.
The Marquette women’s team concluded the first day of the season with singles action versus Western Michigan. Junior Olga Fischer and senior Rachel Hush claimed a pair of straight-set wins over their respective Bronco opponents at the No. 4 and No. 5 positions.
The MU women’s team opened the day with doubles action against South Carolina. The Gamecocks posted quick wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, and the Marquette duo of Paola Calderon and Gillian Hush fell short in an 8-6 setback at No. 2.
