2010 MTC Schedule/Results

The Marquette University men’s and women’s tennis teams continued their respective 2010-11 campaigns Saturday afternoon at the 35th Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic, hosted by The Town Club.

The eight-team field will participate in singles and doubles action through Sunday afternoon. Play begins at 9 a.m. each day and Marquette fans are encouraged to attend. Admission is free. Following the conclusion of play on Sunday, a champion and runner-up will be determined in singles and doubles competition and a sportsmanship award will also be distributed.

Sophomore Kelly Barry collected her biggest victory as a Golden Eagle to date, downing 70th-ranked Anya Morgina of South Carolina, 7-6, 7-5. Barry rallied for the narrow win the first set and held off Morgina in the second set to escape with the team’s lone singles victory against the Gamecocks.

The MU women capped the day with a trio of doubles matches against Kansas State. Marquette fell short at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, but the duo of seniors Rachel Hush and Christina was able to collect an 8-6 victory at the top spot.

Freshman Thibault Troude of the Marquette men’s team earned his first career victory, downing Wisconsin’s Amir Mashal 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 6 position. The Badgers claimed each of the remaining contests, including a pair of narrow tiebreaker wins over Marquette’s Dan Mamalat and Jose Manuel Munoz.

In doubles action, the men’s team claimed two of its three matchups with Ball State. Troude and sophomore Otavio Perim made quick work of their opponents with an 8-1 win at No. 3 and junior Jonathan Schwerin and freshman Dan Mamalat battled for an 8-5 victory at No. 1.

Rain forced the two morning sessions on Saturday to be moved indoors. Singles action took place at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium on campus, while doubles competition moved to Le Club. The afternoon sessions returned to the Town Club and were played on the outdoor clay courts.
