Marquette Tennis Opens Play At Milwaukee Tennis Classic
Sept. 18, 2015
SCHEDULE OF PLAY/RESULTS
The eight-team field battled through less than ideal weather conditions to compete in both singles and doubles action. The men’s programs managed to play the entire day at The Town Club, while the women’s competition moved inside. The three-day event continues Saturday morning with first serve scheduled for 9 a.m.
After beginning the day with doubles play versus Wisconsin, the men’s team faced Ball State in eight singles matchups. Four players picked up victories, including a couple of straight-set results. Freshman Alvaro Verdu collected his first collegiate win, downing BSU’s Andrew Stutz 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. No. 1 player Daniel Fernandez and sophomore Andre Romanello made quick work of their opponents and junior Mackenzie Stearns also came out on top.
On the women’s side, the Golden Eagles also opened with doubles against the Badgers. Freshman Sylvia Ambrosio and senior Erin Gebes cruised to a quick 6-2 decision over their opponent at the No. 1 spot. In singles play, sophomores Paula Tormos Sanchez and Diana Tokar both earned straight-set wins against Cincinnati. Newcomer Leoni Daems also collected her first win at Marquette, downing UC’s Hannah Wille 6-3, 6-1.
The men’s team will play Valparaiso and Ball State on Saturday, while the women face FIU and Cincinnati.
