Sept. 20, 2017
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men’s and women’s tennis teams will open play in the 42nd Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic (MTC) this weekend (Sept. 21-24). The event will host the women’s draw at the Town Club in Fox Point, Wis., and for the first time, be co-hosted by Western Racquet Club (men’s draw) and UWM Panther Arena (finals).
Another major change for 2017 will be the return to an at-large, individual competition. The MTC was founded over four decades ago by Chas Mulcahy, George Gaspar and John Roethle to promote Marquette tennis, as well as the university’s then-new Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
The 26-team field (13 men’s/13 women’s) includes BIG EAST opponents DePaul and Butler, and in-state foes Wisconsin and Milwaukee. The Big Ten will be represented in Illinois, Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota and Nebraska. Arkansas (SEC) and Virginia Tech (ACC) are among other schools in attendance.
Marquette will send four from the men’s side (Greg Anderson, Luis Heredia Gomez, Luke Smrek and Alvaro Verdu) and two from the women’s squad (Fleur Eggink and Natalija Popovic) to compete in this year’s MTC.
Men’s qualifying matches begin on Thursday, Sept. 21 at 8 a.m. Central time. Four men’s players will move on to the main draw taking place Friday.
The first round of 16 doubles is slated for Thursday at 4:45 p.m. CT.
The round of 32 singles matches will commence Friday, Sept. 22 at 8 a.m. CT. Play includes two rounds to the round of eight, with men’s singles held at Western Racquet Club and women’s singles at the Town Club. All players are guaranteed two matches.
On Saturday, Sept. 23, competition resumes at 9 a.m. CT with quarterfinals and semifinals on the men’s side at Western Racquet Club and on the women’s side at The Town Club.
Championship Sunday (Sept. 24) is slated to begin with the MTC Finals, MTEF Juniors and Adult Doubles Tournament at 8 a.m. CT at UWM Panther Arena.
Following Sunday's opening matches, the MTC women’s singles final will begin at 9:30 a.m. CT and the men’s singles final following at 11 a.m. CT.
Since being dubbed an ITA gold-level tournament, MTC singles winners will receive wild cards into the ITA National Tournament in Indian Wells, Calif. From Nov. 1-5.
The tournament concludes with the women’s doubles final at 12:30 p.m. CT followed by the men’s doubles final at 2 p.m. CT.
