Prior to Marquette: Akin earned four letters at Oakwood Academy where she was co-captain her freshman year, and team captain her sophomore through senior years. She played Junior Olympic volleyball for eight years and competed in five consecutive USAV Girls' National Tournaments. She was apart of four regional championship teams and was honored four times as a Homeschool National Tournament All-American where she was named Most Valuable Player in her final year. Akin was named tournament Most Valuable Player at the Life Christian (2006), SW Lady Eagles (2005), and Royal Spectacular (2004) tournaments and was named to 11 all-tournament teams. She competed with the Invasion Volleyball Club for seven years and competed with the TAV for one year. With Kansas City East, Akin won one Missouri State Championship and two National Tournaments.

Personal: Born December 6, 1989, she is the daughter of David and Tina Akin and has one sister, Rachel. Her major is undecided.
