Colorado Comes Back and Defeats the Golden Eagles, 3-2
Sept. 10, 2005
BOULDER, Colo. - Four Golden Eagles hit in double figures but it was not enough as Marquette lost its second straight match to Colorado this afternoon, 3-2 (30-24, 30-23, 18-30, 28-30, 11-15). With the loss the Golden Eagles drop to 5-3, while the Buffaloes improve to 4-1 on the season. "I thought Colorado did a good job or bouncing back after being down 2-0," said head coach Pati Rolf. "I was impressed with the play of our younger players, but I am disappointed with the loss. All we can do is move forward and continue to learn what it takes to be at the top level." The Buffaloes and the Golden Eagles traded points early in game one, but a Theresa Coughlin kill broke the point deadlock and started a five point run for Marquette to lead 21-15. Colorado attempted a comeback, but never came within more than four points of Marquette as the Golden Eagles cruised to a 30-24 game one win. Coughlin led the cause registering four kills, while Jamie Mueller and Kim Todd each added three. Marquette road the momentum from the first game and claimed game two, 30 -22. The Golden Eagles played good defense and held the Buffaloes from ever having more than a one-point advantage. A kill by Coughlin helped the Golden Eagles mount a five-point run to win the game. Marquette hit over 23 percent and held Colorado to just an eight percent attack percentage. The Golden Eagles couldn't come away with wins in the next two games as Colorado won games three and four, 30-18 and 30-28, respectively to force a deciding fifth game. The Buffaloes capitalized on Marquette errors and the Golden Eagles were unable to find a rhythm in game three. Despite a hot start by the Golden Eagles, leading by as many as five points, Colorado caught up and points were traded for rest of the fourth game. The Buffaloes earned four consecutive points to clinch the fourth win, 30-28.
The deciding game proved to be the same story as the Golden Eagles trailed from the beginning of the game. Marquette could never catch the Buffaloes and Colorado went on to win game five, 15-11, and the match, 3-2. Kim Todd led Marquette with 21 kills and 10 digs for her first double-double of the season, while Coughlin contributed 13 marking her eighth consecutive game of registering double-figured kills. Mueller also tallied her first double-double of the season with 12 kills and 11 digs, and Jenn Brown recorded double-digit kills with 11. Colorado's Allie Griffin and Amber Sutherland led the way for the Buffaloes combining for 43 kills. Marquette will wrap-up play in the Colorado Invitational tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. MT against Creighton. |
