Volleyball Opens Spring Campaign Thursday vs. Milwaukee
March 5, 2013
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's volleyball team will open its spring season on Thursday, March 7 against Milwaukee at the Al McGuire Center.
The match itself is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. following a series of drills and is free and open to the public. Doors open at 5 p.m.
"It has been a really provocative spring for us as a team - learning, growing and changing," Marquette head coach Bond Shymansky said. "Our offensive systems are really shifting right now because of personnel, but they are shifting in a new and exciting way. We now get to put that in action and see how it plays out against a familiar opponent. Every year we enjoy great competition in the spring against programs like Milwaukee and we expect to get pressed and challenged and we want our team to raise their level of competitive desire."
Thursday's matchup will be the third spring season meeting between the cross-town foes since 2009. Marquette faced Milwaukee twice last season during the regular season, with the Golden Eagles coming out victorious on both occasions.
"We only get a handful of opportunities to compete in the spring and we want to make the most of those chances," Shymansky said. "We have some young middles right now that we are trying to break in and train. They are doing fantastic in practice so we need to see how that evolves in a real match environment. We are excited to just get the competitive juices flowing again."
The Golden Eagles ended 2012 in a first round loss to Creighton in the NCAA tournament. They were runners up in the 2012 BIG EAST Conference Championship and finished with a 27-7 overall record and a program-best mark of 13-2 in conference action.
After Thursday's match, Marquette will host an all-day tournament at the Al McGuire Center on Saturday, March 30.
