MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's volleyball team opened its spring slate by taking two-of-three sets against Northwestern (25-11, 25-15, 23-25) on Saturday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center.

"I thought some of our players have had a nice winter off-season, and some improvements showed," said head coach Ryan Theis.

Meghan Niemann and Taylor Louis led the charge for MU, recording nine kills each. Niemann, who finished second in hitting percentage for MU in 2015, showed the same efficiency on Saturday, recording her nine kills on 18 attempts, good for a .500 hitting percentage.

Louis paced the Golden Eagles throughout their 2015 season, recording 611 total kills, which was 361 more than Jenna Rosenthal, who finished second on the team with 250 kills.

Junior libero Lauren Houg led Marquette's defensive effort, tallying 14 digs in three sets. Houg led the Golden Eagles with 641 digs in 2015, averaging 5.17 per set. MU's defense also totaled 15 blocks over the three sets.

"We are hoping to learn more about the value of points," said Theis. "Individuals are getting better but ultimately we will need to be a team that does not give away unnecessary points."

The Golden Eagles will continue their spring slate on Saturday, Apr. 9 when they take on in-state foe Wisconsin, with first serve scheduled for 1:00 p.m. CT in Madison.
