MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women’s volleyball team was defeated 4-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-20, 25-13) on Saturday afternoon at McAuley High School in Chicago, in what was the Golden Eagles third spring contest of the year.

“We played better for longer stretches of time this weekend than last weekend,” said head coach Ryan Theis. “We are playing really tough opponents that force us to be better to have a chance to win.”

Freshman Amanda Green led Marquette in numerous categories on Saturday afternoon, tallying 23 kills, four blocks, and hitting .321 in the four-set affair. Joy Miley also pitched in on the offensive end, adding eight kills to MU’s effort.

Sara Blasier added 35 assists in the match, and has now recorded 61 assists in the Golden Eagles’ last two spring contests. Lauren Houg once again led the defensive effort, finishing with a team-high 11 digs. The junior libero now has 35 digs for Marquette this spring, after leading the team with 641 digs during the 2015 season.

“The highlight of the day without question was how Amanda stepped up in the match, scoring 5-6 points in each frame,” said Theis.

Illinois finished last season with a 21-13 record, and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to Minnesota.

The Golden Eagles will take a weekend off before playing their final spring match of the year, when they take on Wisconsin on Wednesday, April 27, for the second time this spring, with first serve scheduled for 7 p.m. CT. The previous matchup resulted in Wisconsin defeating Marquette, 3-1.
