Aug. 26, 2012
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's volleyball team dropped the title match of the 2012 Marquete Challenge to Northwestern, 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 28-26, 25-18), Sunday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center.
With the loss, MU falls to 1-1 on the campaign, while the Wildcats improve to 2-0 overall with the victory.
Freshman outside hitter Erin Lehman led Marquette in kills for the second consecutive game with 14 and earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Stephanie Holthus and Katie Dutchman totaled 18 and 16 kills, respectively, to lead Northwestern.
The Golden Eagles played off the energy of a packed Al McGuire Center student section, managing to hold the lead for the majority of the opening frame. Junior Danielle Carlson, who also earned all-tournament team honors, propelled MU to the opening set win by picking up five kills in the set.
Set two was a back-and-forth event that featured 13 tie scores and six lead changes. Northwestern went on a 5-0 run late in the set to claim a 21-17 lead, and eventually evened the match at 1-1.
The Wildcats' offensive attack continued in the third set. NU claimed the first five points of the set and eventually grabbed a 9-3 advantage. Marquetted managed to chip at the lead until a NU service error pulled the contest even at 16-16.
The Golden Eagles had two set-point opportunities in the third frame, but failed to convert on them. NU took advantage of the miscues and went on to win the pivotal set, 28-26.
Northwestern never trailed in the fourth set and capitalized on a few Marquette communication errors to coast through the set and take the match.
The Golden Eagles return to action Friday, Aug. 31 with a pair of matches at the Xavier Tournament against Mississippi and Tennessee Tech in Cincinnati.
