Marquette Upsets No. 20 Hawaii, 3-2

HONOLULU -- For the third straight year the Marquette volleyball team has opened the season with a road victory over a top-25 ranked opponent as the Golden Eagles (1-0) bested No. 20 Hawaii in a close, five-set battle on Friday night in the 2017 season opener.
MU took down the host Rainbow Wahine 3-2 (24-26, 25-21, 25-18, 18-25, 15-12) led by a career-high 22 kills from sophomore Allie Barber. Freshman Hope Werch put a stamp on her collegiate debut with 12 kills, five dis and three blocks, while redshirt junior Jenna Rosenthall added 10 kills and nine blocks.
After losing a lead in the first set, falling 26-24 to Hawaii, MU rebounded in the second frame with a 25-21 victory. It was tight down to the wire after the Rainbow Wahine used a 7-0 run to take a 21-20 lead. An ace from Speckman and kill from Barber helped close the second set as the Golden Eagles used a 5-0 run to finish and even the match.
Marquette couldn't close out the match in the fourth set as Hawaii earned a 25-18 win, so the match went to a decisive fifth set. Abby Julian served to a 6-0 lead in the final frame, but Hawaii came back to even the score at 12-12 before the Golden Eagles closed out with three consecutive points as Rosenthal and Barber earned the match-winning point with a block.
Marquette continues the Rainbow Wahine Tournament on Saturday, August 26 at 9:45 p.m. CT when the squad takes on No. 13 UCLA.
